Founders should have three wisdoms to be successful
My startup life experiences teach three pearls of wisdom to me, which are things that i never have done that before...but I need to step up to learn more about them. Here are three of them that i learned from my own cases.
- Know when to get funds and Know from whom to be funded
- Hire the right person and motivate them as part of the company
- Building a robust culture for people in our company. Make them love what they do
First of all, I think founders instinctively should know when to get funds and know from whom to be funded. I think getting VC funds means more than getting money from them. The investors become part of board members in the company they invest in. Investors are also like team members. This is the single important factor for a company to be successful in the market. I believe getting VC funds is like building board members as our team. It is about the team not about money.
Also hiring the right and talented people for specific job positions in the company will be a core skill set for the CEO of every startup. Seeing and finding the right person like a hidden gem is another single important mission for a startup to be successful in the market...which I never have done before. But I need to step up to humbly learn and make a bold move on this task.
The third one that I got as wisdom. 10 years ago, I told my old and X co-founders. The culture of our company is the first product we are building. This thought hasn't changed even now for me. I believe culture is like a driving force for a startup to exponentially grow in the market. Make your team members love what they do and enjoy what they achieve with other member. Isn't it amazing? I believe the single core value of every startup comes from the culture that team member makes. This is like American football. They make scrums to win as one team among designers, developers, and marketers and even with investors. They are aligned with single core mission and vision of the company. Like I said again, It is not about money but about the team.
One last thing for startup wisdom...I think founders should know this idea can be grown by VC-backed investment or boostrapped by yourself. The founder should have eyes on it. There are some business idea that needs upfront investment money to win the battle or some other ideas don't need financial resources so they gradually build products and release them and make a small profit over the period. I think the founder should learn how to strategically think like "What make it works or not" and finally make bold moves in the market. These are three and one extra wisdoms that I learned in the last 10 years.
